Ottawa Office Hosts Honduran Mennonite Pastor
Stefan Cherry
11/06/2009 MCC Canada's Ottawa Office had the privilege of hosting Francisco Machado, a Honduran Mennonite pastor and mining justice activist, from November 2-5, 2009. Currently residing in the U.S., Francisco was forced to flee Honduras last year after receiving death threats because of his involvement in mining reform. During his visit to Ottawa Francisco participated in a conference on the extractive industry co-sponsored by the Canadian Network for Corporate Accountability and the Mining Association of Canada. He visited with Members of Parliament from all four major political parties, including several who sit on the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development (which is currently studying Bill C-300). Finally, Francisco joined activists from Guatemala and Tanzania in speaking at a public event co-sponsored by MCC and KAIROS. Francisco will continue to share about the impact of Canadian mining companies in Honduras over the next few weeks as he attends the MCC Saskatchewan, MCC Manitoba, and MCC Canada Annual General Meetings.
